The Tongue in Chinese Medicine

In Chinese Herbal Medicine, the tongue is a valuable diagnostic tool that provides great insight into an individual’s health. The appearance, colour, shape, and coating of the tongue can reveal imbalances in the body’s energy and organ function. For example, a pale tongue may indicate Qi deficiency or blood deficiency, while a red tongue can suggest excess heat or inflammation. A yellow or white coating on the tongue can indicate digestive issues related to the spleen and stomach.

The tongue’s relationship to specific organs and meridians allows experienced Chinese Medicine practitioners to assess the body’s overall balance. In the same way as your feet, hand or face can provide a map to issues within your body, so too can your tongue. For example, the tip of the tongue can correspond to the heart, while the middle section can relate to the spleen and stomach.

By closely examining your tongue (or via photo if you’re attending the clinic via a telehealth consult), an experienced Chinese medicine practitioner, like Brendan, can identify patterns of imbalance that may not be immediately apparent through other diagnostic methods. This holistic approach to diagnosis enables targeted treatments, including dietary adjustments, to restore balance and promote healing.

In practice, tongue diagnosis is often used in conjunction with other diagnostic techniques, including your medical history amd symptoms, to provide a comprehensive understanding of your  individual health. By analysing your tongue, Brendan can tailor dietary recommendations and treatment plans to address your specific health issues, ensuring a more effective and personalised approach to treatment.

This integration of dietary therapy with tongue diagnosis underscores the holistic nature of Chinese herbal medicine, where diet, lifestyle, and treatment are all interconnected parts of you maintaining optimal health.

How to photograph your tongue for a telehealth consult

You will be asked to email a clear photo of your tongue to our clinic when completing your form.

To prepare for a telehealth consult in Chinese medicine involving tongue diagnosis, you will need to take a clear, well-lit photo of your tongue;

  • preferably in natural light if possible, avoiding harsh or artificial lighting – which can affect the colour of the image.
  • without flash – don’t use flash as it can distort the colors and details of the tongue
  • preferably in the morning or after a period of fasting, as food and drink can affect your tongue’s appearance. Ensure you haven’t eaten or drunk anything that could alter the tongue’s colour or coating.

Positioning of the tongue and focus:

Extend your tongue: Fully extend your tongue to show the entire surface, including the tip, sides, and back.
