Many people searching online ask the question: “Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?”
The short answer is no.
While both therapies use fine, sterile needles, their philosophy, assessment process and treatment goals are very different. As someone who has been practising Chinese Medicine since 1998, I often explain this to new patients who come to Authentic Acupuncture in Balmain, often looking for long-term solutions rather than simply temporary symptom relief.
The Similarity
Both acupuncture and dry needling involve inserting very fine needles into the body. As such, needling trigger points (dry needling) is one technique of hundreds known by fully qualified, 4 year Bachelor Degree trained Acupuncturists
That’s where most of the similarities end.
Dry needling generally focuses on releasing muscular trigger points, reducing muscle tension and improving movement. It is a 2 day course commonly used by physiotherapists and other manual therapists to learn this one specific technique.
Acupuncture takes a much broader view of health.
Acupuncture Looks Beyond the Pain
At Authentic Acupuncture, I don’t simply ask:
“Where does it hurt?”
Instead I ask:
- Why has the pain developed?
- Why has it persisted?
- Why has your body been unable to recover naturally?
- What other systems may be contributing?
For two people with identical shoulder pain, I may use completely different acupuncture points because the underlying cause is different.
One patient may have muscular overload.
Another may have poor sleep, chronic stress, digestive dysfunction or hormonal changes affecting recovery.
The treatment is personalised to the individual—not just the diagnosis.
Every Treatment is Individualised
One of the biggest misconceptions is that acupuncture follows a standard recipe.
It doesn’t.
When people search for Acupuncture in Balmain, they’re often looking for an experienced practitioner who takes the time to understand the whole person.
No two consultations are exactly alike.
Every appointment considers:
- your current symptoms
- medical history
- lifestyle
- sleep
- stress levels
- movement patterns
- recovery capacity
- previous treatments
This allows each treatment to evolve as your condition improves.
Not a Factory Approach
One thing I have always believed throughout my career is that healthcare should never feel like a production line.
Some clinics understandably need to work quickly by training their practitioners to follow standardised protocols, but my philosophy has always been different.
Rather than applying the same protocol to every patient with back pain or neck pain, I adapt every treatment according to what your body is presenting on that particular day.
Pain is only one piece of the puzzle.
Sometimes treating the area of pain is appropriate, just as in ‘Dry Needling’, sometimes it is absolutely not. An experienced acupuncturist will be able to explain why (Such as deeper underlying causes, local inflammation, sytemic disease as co factors etc).
Sometimes treating somewhere completely different creates the greatest improvement.
Clinical experience teaches you when each approach is appropriate. And very often, a skilled Acupuncturist will use ‘Dry Needling’ (Which is actually called ‘Sore point’ needling in ancient Chinese medicine) and the broad range and more comprehensive techniques and assessment capabilities of Acupuncture in combination.
More Than Needles
Acupuncture is more than simply inserting needles.
Treatment may include advice regarding:
- posture
- movement
- breathing
- recovery
- sleep
- stress management
- Chinese herbal medicine
- dietary recommendations
These factors often influence why symptoms continue to return.
Experience Matters
After more than 25 years in clinical practice, I have learned that successful treatment is rarely about following a textbook protocol.
It is about listening carefully, examining thoroughly and selecting the treatment that best suits the individual sitting in front of you.
That is why every treatment at Authentic Acupuncture is personalised.
