Abdominal pain and discomfort is a common presenting problem at the Authentic Acupuncture clinic in Balmain. When it comes to chronic and unremitting symptoms of abdominal pain, period pain, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, ulcers, chron’s or IBS symptoms that have not been successfully treated by conventional means, Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine presents an invaluable, drug and side effects free possibility for relief and long term resolution of said complaints.
However, there are exercises you can do yourself to help alleviate abdominal pain and dysfunction along with treatment that may help accelerate results from Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine. The tummy rubbing exercise may indeed provide results in and of itself!
In the above video posted on Authentic Acupuncture’s Instagram page, we find a simple method that you can apply anywhere, anytime that may substantially help to relieve symptoms of abdominal pain and dysfunction.
Learn how to rub your tummy. In fact, it’s instinctual. With a little coaching, we can bring this instinctual behavior into the light of conscious awareness and make it deliberate and focused for a specific outcome. It’s natural that we put our hands to a part of the body that is injured or in pain. Using this reflex, with clockwise movements of the hands over the abdomen, we can help to encourage the peristaltic direction of the bowel to relieve symptoms of constipation, wind and pain. With period pain, stomach ulcers or acid re-flux we would also utilize the clockwise movements of the hands over the abdomen. In the case of diarrhea, we can rub clockwise first to relieve any discomfort. Then, reverse the direction , for what the ancient Chinese believe, would encourage the absorptive functions of the bowel to relieve diarrhea.
For success, the mind-body focus is used. The mind focuses on what one is doing with the hands and what one is feeling on the abdomen. The body does the movements. So in unison you are concentrating – feeling – doing.
Remember, you can heal yourself!
